In the concept of Lean, Gemba (Japanese for “the real place”) refers to the place where value is created, e.g. sales floor or production line. This workplace analysis ensures quick identification of the current state of the company. The Gemba walk, i.e. physical assessment of processes in the company, shows what further actions should be taken to implement Lean principles.

Management cannot evaluate organizational capabilities only by reading reports or documents. It is necessary to go where processes take place, evaluate all possibilities, and plan possible follow-up actions.
